What can we say? We love Western Washington.........even when "it rains on our parade". Saturday morning started out
a little wet, so everyone was allowed to drive in raingear...whatever would keep them dry. It did stop raining about half way
through Dressage and was sunny and nice for the balance of the drivers and for everyone during Marathon. Sunday we had gorgeous
weather all day.
We had some new drivers trying this game for their first time.........Anne came over the mountains with "Harmony", Markeen
was here with "Jack" that we all know from his days in Tam Hinck's pair. Jaki came with "Pace" for their first go, and 9 year
old Austin Bannerman from Oregon did a great job with his little gelding "Marshall". He did fire his 'gator (mom) for helping
him eliminate in a couple hazards on Saturday, but reconsidered and gave her another try. They went out and rewalked hazards
Saturday evening and everything went smoothly for them on Sunday....with Melissa (mom) earning a 'gator award and Austin placing
5th out of a class of 10. The whole family plans to be back.
Sometimes, in addition to new drivers we have the issue of new horses. I positioned myself at the first creek crossing ready for 4
drivers I considered to have potential for needing assistance at the creek. Carol Elvin's new mare took exception to the first
crossing on Saturday and showed a little hesitation at the second crossing and then was fine on her own. But, if there is an
award for making the organizer work, it goes to Jaki and "Pace". He decided he was NOT going to get his feet wet! I provided him
with a "little support" for the first crossing, met him at the second crossing for "support" there, and then trotted alongside to
the third crossing (you got it, additional "support") and then off to the 4th crossing we went. As I trotted along in front of
him, he pulled up along side of me and Jaki said "Oh look, how cute, he is trotting alongside you just like a little puppy dog."
I think my response was something like "This old dog is getting tired." Running in rubber barn boots is not necessarily my idea
of fun. Sunday he did not require as much help at the first crossing or the second, and I told her she was on her own for the last
two! Would like to hope I ran a couple pounds off....one of the "fringe benefits" of being an organizer!
All joking aside, we enjoyed a great weekend with wonderful friends. And we are not the only ones who enjoyed it. Our judge,
Karin Bishop, comes from the ridden world of Eventing. She has judged for us 3-4 times for carriage events, and after this weekend
is now looking at earning her CDE Judge and TD licenses. AND!!!! she is looking into taking driving lessons here with Terri and
getting a driving horse......a Mini???? Another friend who competes in Game Shows came to watch Saturday and left giving me
instructions to find her a Mini, harness and cart...she WANTS to play this game.
Thanks to our competitors for another great event-
Ken and Maureen
